The high voltage encapsulation of automotive ignition coils serves an important purpose: converting low voltage into high voltage. Similar to a regular transformer, the ignition coil consists of a primary coil and a secondary coil with a higher number of turns. However, the functioning of an ignition coil is different from that of a regular transformer. While a regular transformer operates continuously, the ignition coil works intermittently. It repeatedly stores and releases energy at different frequencies based on the engine's varying speed.

When the primary coil is energized, a strong magnetic field is generated around it as the current increases. The iron core of the coil stores this magnetic field energy. When the switch device disconnects the primary coil circuit, the magnetic field of the primary coil rapidly decays, inducing a high voltage in the secondary coil. The faster the disappearance of the primary coil's magnetic field, the greater the instantaneous current when the circuit is broken. Additionally, the higher the turns ratio between the two coils, the higher the induced voltage in the secondary coil.

The ignition coil, also known as the ignition transformer or high voltage pack, converts the normal 12V voltage into a high voltage of 10,000 volts for ignition within the cylinders. Its purpose is to ignite the highly combustible gas (air-fuel mixture) inside the cylinders, allowing the engine to function and generate power. Think of it as a ignition mechanism like that of a lighter.
